The J League returned at the weekend with the pick of the matches being a 2-2 draw between Yokohama F. Marinos and Cerezo Osaka. Elsewhere the champions Kawasaki Frontale began their title defence with a narrow 1-0 win over FC Tokyo.

Following the four-goal thriller at the Nissan Stadium, the Marinos manager Kevin Muscat claimed it is in the DNA as he said “We will continue to take risks and continue to attack teams. When it comes off it’s great and then from the other side, you’ve just got to make sure you keep getting better, take your opportunities and see teams off.

“The squad here last season had been together for several years and had experience from that perspective.

“There’s been a bit of a turnover of players and that’s been out of our control - so we’re looking for other players to step up and challenge themselves.

“The idea is to rejuvenate and how quickly it all comes together only time will tell.”

That is exciting news for fans of the League if they want to see goals and clearly, the club has not shied away from Ange ball.

There is plenty of overaction to keep an eye on too, as Kashima Antlers look to once again challenge for a title. They started the season well with a win over Gamba Osaka with Ayase Ueda getting himself a brace.

The 23-year-old will be looking to impress this season and return to the international set up having only played for his country at the Copa America and in the EAFF tournament which are both tournaments in which Japan did not select their strongest side.

The other notable result that would have raised eyebrows was seen as Urawa Reds a team many think could be near the top of the table went down 1-0 at newly-promoted Kyoto Sanga.

Kawasaki Frontale 1 - 0 FC Tokyo
Yokohama F. Marinos 2 - 2 Cerezo Osaka
Shimizu S-Pulse 1 - 1 Consadole Sapporo
Kyoto Sanga 1 - 0 Urawa Reds
Gamba Osaka 1 - 3 Kashima Antlers
Sanfrecce Hiroshima 0 - 0 Sagan Tosu
Avispa Fukuoka 1 - 1 J├║bilo Iwata
