Should Wu Lei return home?

Wu Lei started this week for his side
Espanyol as they lost 2-0 in the Copa del Rey to La Liga side Osasuna. The Chinese superstar though is not having the best time in Spain currently as he's played just 606 minutes over 17 matches.

Wu Lei is not getting the game time

The former Shanghai SIPG forward is playing in the Spanis Second Division with Espanyol after relegation last season but sit top as they look set for an immediate return to La Liga. Despite his side cruising in the league, it is not plain sailing for the China forward as he has scored just twice in the league all season.

Many of the displays for the 29-year-old in recent weeks have been cameo appearances from the bench, in fact, the last time he played more than 45 minutes in the league was in a 3-1 over FC Cartagena at the start of December.

Then with a chance to shine from the start in the Copa del Rey from the start, his performance fell short as he was replaced after 75 minutes for Vadillo. It was not the type of performance that will have the Espanyol boss Vicente Moreno rushing to put him back in the side for sure.

To show you how far he has fallen that despite being the only high profile Chinese footballer outside of the country after two consecutive China Footballer of the Year awards in 2018 and 2019 this year he lost out on the award to Jiangsu Suning skipper Wu Xi. The award is judged by 114 people and handed out by Titan Sports.

His recent form has made fans call for his return to the CSL with Sina Sports saying "There is a voice saying that Wu Lei should come back as soon as possible. Wu Lei is having a difficult situation due to stagnation throughout the season."

Chinese football fans are still of course very proud of the forward and with him still has not reached his 30s many will hope he can hold out for longer and show is worth in European football even if it is away from Spain.
