The first-ever promotion/relegation playoff between the Taiwan Premier League and the Taiwan Second Division

This coming Sunday (12/13/2020) at 14:00 (local time), is the day that we will see the first-ever Taiwan playoff between the first and second tiers of Taiwanese football. The winner of this match will play next season in the Taiwan Premier League, while the loser will play in the second division.

Taipei Red Lions, who finished 7th in the Taiwan Premier League, will play Inter Taoyuan who finished 2nd in the new Taiwan Second Division. These have thrown up an intriguing matchup for the first-ever pro/rel playoff match because both of these sides of 'expat created' sides who are slowly making the transition into a Taiwanese 'league side' while getting to a point where they now have as many, or more local Taiwanese players than foreign players.

Showing that it is possible to successfully execute the transition. This has been one of the key steps of making a Taiwanese football pyramid, by integrating the many amateur sides playing in local leagues all over the island. Not all teams will want to join a top-level league set up, but getting every league and club affiliated to the association would be a great start.

The playoff is going to be one hell of a match, and also guarantees that a site created by expats will remain in the Taiwan Premier League.

The game will be streamed live on the CTFA.TV Youtube channel. One would expect that the Red Lions would go into this match as the favourite with them being the higher-ranked team, and having a bit of form coming to the end of the season.

That being said, Inter Taoyuan have performed well all season in the Second Division, only losing out on automatic promotion to CPFC, who are bankrolled by the petrol station. One thing Red Lions will have that could help them, is they are used to playing against better quality opposition.

If they come into the match with an arrogant approach and thinking that they’re better because they’re in a higher league, then they could come unstuck, as their opposition is definitely more than capable of getting the win they need to propel them to the Premier League for the first time.

It is going to be an entertaining match, and it will be intriguing to see which side comes out on top.
