What is Takumi Minamino role at Liverpool?

This week Liverpool discovered they would not be breaking a record points total in the English Premiership but they were still far and away champions of England this season. This was thanks to many stars but there is one player we are still waiting to see the best from and that is January signing Takumi Minamino who still does not have a nailed down role at the club.

He was a bargain

Jurgen Klopp since his time with Liverpool has been known to find a bargain and when he bought Takumi Mianmino over from Austrian side RB Salzburg for around £7million it looked like he had done it again.

The Japan midfielder has since joining in January found it hard to find a starting place and he is yet to complete a full 90 minutes in the league. A place in that attack is of course hard to find when he has Bobby Firmino, Salah or ManĂ© to dislodge.

A next dilemma to overcome is where to you play the tricky attacking midfielder or forward? Ideally, he would play in an attacking midfield role, like maybe part of a three-man midfield on the wing or just off a striker.

These are positions he played in Austria and with his country but they are not positions Klopp likes to play with Liverpool. A reason for this is he plays the Gegenpressing which basically means to press teams all over the pitch meaning all players need to attack and defend.

A latter part to that the defending and pressing is something Minamino will need to work on, as Andy Robertson said on first joining the club he was sick after his first training session, showing just how much Liverpool like to work their players.

Therefore I think a key to success for Minamino in Liverpool will be for him to get to the same fitness levels as the players around him and if he can do that he will be a success as he has all the talent.

Lots of hope

Much like most players brought in at Liverpool Takumi Minamino is being blended in to get used to the team's system and approach. This means he should not be concerned about his time on the pitch at the moment and he still has every chance.

There is a lot of hope for him too with many feeling he is better in a more central position as a creative midfielder or in a false nine role.

The issue is then if you put him in the side you take out Bobby Firmino who despite his lack of goals many fans see as a key part of this Liverpool side. It seems then it will just be a case of waiting and impressing when he gets a chance.

With two matches remaining and the title wrapped up maybe this time will come now and he will get his full 90 minutes before the season is out against either Chelsea or Newcastle United.
