Taipei Red Lions had been struggling all season to register their first victory, as slight improvements in games were followed by disappointing results, although that was all put to bed this weekend.

Gerrado inspires Red Lions to victory over defending champions

Taipei Red Lions went into last weekends match against Tatung at the bottom of the league after haemorrhaging goals for most of the season. Although last week they finally put a stop to the defeats, by registering a 0-0 draw against Hang Yuen.

That seemed to have been the confidence booster the team needed going into their match against defending champions Tatung. They did though go into the match 22/1 longshots to win the match but they had a Gerrado inspired performance to thank for their brilliant 2-0 win.

Setting up to play on the counter-attack, Lions looked to hit Tatung on the break, as Tatung was spending large chunks of the game in the Lions half.

The Lions keeper dealt with such attacks by quickly punting a long hoofball up the pitch whenever he had the chance. The hoof was seemingly going nowhere, but Gerrado decided he was going to chase this one down anyway. His persistence was greatly rewarded as the Tatung centreback messed up the clearance, and he then stole past him with the ball.

Charging down towards goal, he still had a lot of work to do to score but he kept his cool as he slotted home a very tidy finish into the corner of the net to put Lions ahead. Showing excellent composure, as Lions have been struggling for goals, and conceding them by the bucket load - panic could have crept in easily as he went to welly it in. However, calmness remained and slot home he did.

Tatung was rattled, as they were obviously not expecting to fall behind against Lions.

Tatung's play became more urgent and desperate

Red Lions defence held up well, as Tatung suddenly became more urgent and desperate to find the back of the net and drag themselves back into the match.

They threw what they could at Red Lions but didn't get anywhere. Tatung's direct style of play hasn't worked all season, and they seem to have no plan B when a team has the directness of their play under control. As they just continue doing the same routine throughout the whole match, and other teams have them sussed. They need to add more creativity and imagination to their football.

They were pushing for the equaliser though, and this what saw Red Lions hit them with sucker-punch. Gerrado was the thorn in Tatung's side again, as another defensive lapse allowed the Lions attack to counter. The ball finally finding itself at the sweet left peg of Gerrado, who again slotted home with aplomb, to put the game to bed and confine Tatung to another defeat in what is turning out to be a terrible season for them so far.
