Taiwan women overcome Thailand

The week started well for the Taiwan women down-under as they defeated Thailand 1-0 thanks to a Ting Chi first-half goal. The victory meant the side currently sit top of Group B in the Olympic qualifiers.

A great win

Taiwan took on Thailand on Monday is their opening Olympic qualifier as they looked to improve on their 1-1 draw with them back in November.

That is exactly what they did to thanks to an assist from Wang Hsiang Huei and a goal inside the six-yard box from Ting Chi. This was a great result and has provided excitement around the women's game throughout Taiwan.

Here was a positive setup Taiwan side too as they went with the good old fashioned 4-4-2 as it was clear they knew they could attack Thailand as well as defend.

Thailand did start well though and tested Tsai Ming Jung in the Taiwan goal as they had a few early corners. It was then though on 19 minutes that the women took the lead as they found the net from close range after a bit of a scramble around the box.

It could have been more too as before half time Chen Yen-Ping came close with a free-kick. The Thai women did threaten once more with corners but they could not create too much as the half ended 1-0.

The Thai side came out the blocks well in the second half and looked to get that goal to level the match. They did try hard but they could not get the breakthrough despite putting the pressure on.

This saw Taiwan make changes as they looked to sit back and keep their slender lead. They did just that too as the game ended 1-0 in what was a great result of the women as they look to make her name in female football.

At the end of the game, the coach Kazuo Echigo who was capped six times for Japans men's side said "I was lucky to have the opportunity to make up the 2019 East Asian Cup finals (with Taiwan) at the end of last year. We will now try and do our best when we face Australia, a side ranked 10th in the world.

Among our side are many young stars of tomorrow. They are important figures for the next generation of women's football in Taiwan. This qualifying tournament allows players to experience for themselves the strength of other sides."
