The future of South Korean football looks exciting as their youngsters added to the Asian Games title in 2018 by winning the 2020 U23 Asian Cup. They did this in style too by winning every match and conceding just three goals in six matches ending with an extra time 1-0 victory over Saudi Arabia.

Great win

The match throughout was an end to end affair with a few too many misplaced passes and silly mistakes. South Korea despite this was the stronger side throughout and looked to threaten Saudi Arabia everywhere.

Despite all the end to end action, the game ended goalless after 90 minutes, it then took till just seven minutes from the end for the deadlock to finally be broken. This was seen as Jeong Tae-Wook the Deagu defender found the net.

The required came from a Lee Dong-Gyeong freekick that found the head of Tae-Wook who did well the rise high to head the ball down into the back of the net.

In the end, it was a great result and South Korea deserved it as throughout they have been well organised and solid. They might not play the nicest prettiest football but to see such disciplined play from the young team is positive news moving forward.

After the match, the Korean coach was asked a series of questions on the future of the side and the upcoming Olympics and this is what he had to say.

What are the aims for the side at the Tokyo Olympics?

Kim Hak-Beom: It's hard to talk about the Olympics just now. The countries current best result is the bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics and this time we are aiming for more than that.

Any comments on Park Ji-Sung being at the match?

Kim Hak-Beom: I didn't meet him but I saw an article in the media from him cheering on our players. Am sure that would have been a great help for the players.

Can you give a hint about the wildcards you will use at the Olympics (three of aged players)?

Kim Hak-Beom: It is inappropriate to discuss that right now. Preparations for the players involved can change depending on how they are playing. I hope then you will wait and find out in time.
