It is nine consecutive Olympics for South Korean football as their under 23 side defeated Australia at the U23 Asian Cup Final. Along with Qualifying, for the Olympics, South Korea face Saudi Arabia at the weekend for a chance to be champions of Asia for their age group.

Korea cruise to win

The South Korea side led by Kim Hak-Beom defeated Australia 2-0 on Wednesday at the Thammasat Stadium to reach the final. In all, it was a comfortable win and was the first time during the tournament they had won a match by more than the single goal.

The result means that South Korea, Japan, Saudi Arabia and Australia or Uzbekistan will represent Asia at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The Koreans will be at the Olympics again this year and they have been an ever-present at the competition since they played at the 1988 Seoul Games.

The match itself then and the East Asian side started with a 4-2-3-1 formation. This saw Oh Se-Hun as the frontman with Kim Dae-Won, Jung Seung-Won and Eom Won-Sang sitting behind him.

This was a changed side to the one that had defeated Jordan 2-1 on Sunday with the coach making a total of five changes.

Having then made the semifinal with well-drilled performances Korea were on the front foot here from the start and run out deserved winners.

Despite all the good play, the scoreline was level at halftime but we only had to wait for 11 second-half minutes for South Korea to finally get the opening goal. Aforementioned occurred after a Lee You-Hyeon shot hit the post, but Kim Dae-won calmly slotted home from the rebound into the empty net.

The second then did come on 76 minutes as Korea continued to look the stronger side, this time the goal came from Lee Dong-Gyeong as he hit the ball in off the post.
