Vítor Pereira knocks back Everton but could head to Arsenal

The name Vítor Pereira could be a well-known name in English football shortly, this comes after the Portuguese coach in charge of CSL side Shanghai SIPG ruled himself out of the Everton job and then quickly put his name in the hat for the Arsenal job.

Who he is

The 51-year-old is currently in charge at Shanghai SIPG and has been there since December 2017 where he replaced André Villas-Boas. In his time at the club, he stopped Guangzhou Evergrande strong hold on Chinese football by winning the league in 2018.

They won the title in no small part down to the help of the now Espanyol striker Wu Lei. As in the 2017/18 season, he was named in the league's team of the season and finished top goalscorer with 27 goals.

To show how impressive this is, it was the first time a Chinese player had been a top goal scorer in the league since 2007.

Then back to Vítor before his arrival in China, he had taken charge of eight sides, including FC Porto, Olympiacos, Fenerbahçe and 1860 Munich. His most successful times at these clubs saw him win a league title with Olympiacos and two with FC Porto.

The manager started his career down the league and even managed youth sides in Portugal after retiring through injury at 28-years-old.

No to Everton, yes to Arsenal.... maybe

To the present day during Tuesday, we saw a host of media reports suggest that the SIPG manager could be heading to Everton. The rumours became stronger and it looked like he could be the man to replace Marco Silva then before the day was out in England he ruled himself out.

At the time he said "It's an honour and I'm grateful to be considered by a club I have so much respect for but I am still the coach of SIPG and SIPG is a club close to my heart," he told Sky Sports News.

"It means that in this moment I'm not in a position to make any other commitments. I need time to think and plan my future by looking at the options I have."

You would then be forgiven for thinking that is that then and the man is staying in Shanghai. Well, you should know better because this is Chinese football and things are never how they look in the world of football in China.

The reason for saying this is that on Wednesday Vítor Pereira became heavily linked with the vacant role at Arsenal. Reports went as far as to say the job was his for him to accept and that he would look at his options over the coming days.

Meanwhile, many names have been linked with the job at Arsenal so I would take this story with a pinch of salt but the man at SIPG is certainly making people aware of his presence.
