Kashima Antlers claim top spot

There are just six matches remaining in the J League 1 and Kashima Antlers are in pole position. FC Tokyo run of away matches has finally caught up with them as they surrendered the top spot they have held for much of the season over the weekend.

Three points take Antlers top

Over the weekend at the Yanmar Stadium Nagai Antlers overcame Cerezo Osaka to gain the top spot in the J League. This happened as they won 1-0 away from home thanks to an early Inukai goal.

Antlers travelled to Osaka knowing that three points would take them to the top of the table. This was down to the fact that FC Tokyo had fallen to a 2-1 defeat at Sagan Tosu on Saturday afternoon.

In the end, the sixth-minute goal from a set play was enough to take the Champions League quarter-finalist to the top of the table. The goal came from a Nagaki cross that was helped on by Machida before finding the head of Inukai.

Osaka did play well and will feel unlucky their five-game winning streak came to an end in defeat. The home side did have plenty of chances too but could not capitalise on them.

They came with Bruno Mendes and Souza both coming to close to an equaliser. In the end, though the Korean Kwoun Sun-Taein in goals for the visitors managed to keep them out.

The second half saw Antlers take more of a control of the match and in the end, the single goal was enough to take the side top.

Will they hang on and lift the championship trophy? Time will tell but I think with FC Tokyo's hard run in it would be harsh to bet against them.
