Roger Schmidt mobbed at airport

Last week we brought you the story that Roger Schmidt had been sacked after two defeats on the trot. It was seen as a mistake by pretty much anyone who had seen his side play this season and this was clear as over a thousand fans gathered at the airport to say goodbye.

16 out of 20 is not enough

Despite winning his opening ten matches of the current season the Germans record of late has not been great. The fans clearly still have faith in with the showing over so many fans wishing to send their best wishes to him on his departure.

Those 16 wins in 20 games were not enough for the people who make decisions at Beijing Guoan though.  Overall I think his time will be seen as a success as the former Bayer Leverkusen boss who arrived in the summer of 2017 and was a cup winner last year. In addition, they qualified for the Asian Champions League and could still win this seasons league as they sit just four points of the top.

There is an element of this sacking that is good for the 52-year-old with him returning home to Germany where his wife and children live. This was evidenced as he said The job in China had "demanded a great deal from the family," as he repeatedly explained. But the adventure was also a lot of fun as he said: "I was very positively surprised in every way".
