Roger Schmidt is sacked by Beijing Guoan

The world of Chinese football never fails to amaze and on Wednesday it took another twist as with his side sitting third in the CSL Roger Schmidt was sacked by Beijing Guoan. The side had lost their place at the top after losing two matches on the trot but this news seems strange with the side still well on course to win their first title since 2009.

Bruno to take the lead

The former Bayer Leverkusen boss will now be replaced by Frenchman Bruno Génésio. To those who don't know much about the new man in Beijing, he spent his playing career in France. While he is most known for playing and managing Lyon in France.

As a manager, he coached Lyon from December 2015 to May 2019 where he had a 55% win ratio over 182 matches. Then after a summer out of the game, he will hope to revive Guoan's campaign as they face Hebei CFFC on Friday.

Schmidt leaves China

The German will feel fairly disappointed to be leaving China as he still looked like he could lead his club to a league title. This would have come after already winning the FA Cup with them in November 2018 with victory over Shandong Luneng.

The season started so well for the green side of Beijing as they won their opening ten matches in the CSL. They have however lost four times in their last 10 league matches and exited the Asian Champions League at the group stages.

Now sits a four-point gap at the top with Guangzhou Evergrande sitting in the first place. With ten games remaining there could still be a twist to this tail as Beijing Guoan face the Guangzhou side a week on Sunday in what could prove to be a huge six-pointer at the Workers' Stadium.
