Akira Nishino wants to take Thailand to the 2022 World Cup

The new Thailand manager Akira Nishino wants to guide Thailand to the 2022 World Cup, and he has a plan to achieve that, this is building his side around Thailand's star players currently playing in the J-League.

“Of course, I want to take the Thai national team to the World Cup"

Akira Nishino has said, "he wants to take Thailand to the World Cup, because of course everyone wants to go to the World Cup". However, Nishino certainly knows the task in hand of achieving this aim, and how near impossible it will be.

Thailand have recently been somewhat riding on the back of a golden generation, but a vast majority of those players are coming to the end of their career. The current crop coming through don't seem be able to match the generation of Thai players close to hanging up their boots.

Will the new batch of players be able to attain a similar level, or even raise the bar for Thai football? That is obviously unknown right now, but in hiring Nishino the Thai FA have hired a man who has good experience of developing players, and his team were one of the surprise packages in the Russian World Cup.

The J-League three amigos

Chanathip Songkrasin (Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo), Theerathon Bunmathan (Yokohama F. Marinos) and Thitipan Puangchan (Oita Trinita) are the three Thai players currently playing in Japan's J-League 1 that Nishino is hoping to build his World Cup squad around.

The three of them are firm fixtures in their clubs match day sides, and have become essential to their clubs success. Due to how well they have slotted into their sides, Nishino will likely look at using his connections that he will certainly have in Japan to get more of his national team squad into J-League sides. This will benefit him for the World Cup matches if he succeeds, but that is just my opinion, he could just as well be happy enough with things as they are now.

I actually think Nishino knows Thailand's chances of making the World Cup are extremely slim, but it all depends how long he stays there because if he is there long enough and with the expansion of the World Cup from 2026 he could stand a better chance of achieving every Thai's supporters dream of qualifying for the tournament, then he would truly become a national hero.
