All female officals at the AFC Cup

This week in an AFC tie between Yangon United of Myanmar and NagaWorld of Cambodia history was made. This was seen as for the first time in a men's professional match a female trio officiated the match.

The three to make history were Japanese officials Yoshimi Yamashita and assistants Makoto Bozono and Naomi Teshirogi.

History being made

In order for the woman to officiate the match, they had to take part in a fitness test which was the same as all male officials. They, of course, passed with every confidence in them doing a great job in the AFC Match.

Before the match referee, Yamashita said “This is one of my dreams, we’ve worked very hard and this is the result.

“I have to thank the AFC for giving us this opportunity to join the history books in women’s refereeing in Asia.”

The hope will be that this will see more female officials in the men's game, meanwhile the trio is clearly well respected in the game as they are part of the AFC’s list of 12 Asian match officials who will be at this year’s Women’s World Cup in France, which starts on 7th June.

To the match itself

The game in the ended 2-0 to the Myanmar side Yangon United, in a match they expected to win. The game went well for the officials too in an entertaining match.

The first big call in the match was correct when on 53 minutes Zogbe for NagaWorld handballed it in the box and Yangon United were awarded a penalty. The penalty was saved however by the Cobidian keeper Sou Yaty as Sylla hit a tame penalty into his right-hand corner.

On 75 minutes the home crowd of 241 were cheering as they went into the lead through a lovely Maung Maung Lwin strike in the bottom left corner. Then somehow Zogbe once again handballed the ball in the 96th minute to allow the home side a second penalty.
This time the Brazilian Miller made no mistake from the spot as he won the tie 2-0 for his club. Yamashita who booked Zogbe for the first handball chose not to send off the man from the Ivory Coast in the dying moments for the second handball.
