The return of the Lippi

The fun and games in Chinese football continue this week as Fabio Cannavaro's two-match stint with China came to an end. After a poor China Cup with defeats to Thailand and Uzbekistan, the 45-year-old called time on his short time with the national side.

Time to concentrate on Evergrande

An official reason giving for the Italian resigning is that the Guangzhou Evergrande boss wants to concentrate on his club side. I think to be honest it was always a gamble for China to put him in charge in the first place and one that did not pay off.

Cannavaro announced on Instagram on Monday his reason for leaving the role;
Out of respect for the country that has been hosting me for some years, I feel the duty to communicate that I have renounced my position as head coach of the Chinese National Football Team.
I wish to sincerely thank Guangzhou Evergrande Football Club and the Chinese Football Association for having offered me the position of the head coach of the two most important football teams in the country, however, this double assignment would take me away from my family for too long.
More than one month ago I informed my club about my intention to dedicate myself exclusively to my squad and my players. By maintaining only the position as head coach of Guangzhou Evergrande, I hope to contribute to the growth of young Chinese football players, working every day with passion and professionalism.
I wish the Chinese National Team all the best for the qualifications to the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup. Thanks again to everybody.

Lippi to return?

According to reports in China this week it looks like Marcello Lippi will return just three months after leaving the job. The country currently sits 74th in FIFA rankings and bringing Lippi back does not seem like the best move to improve the side.

It was reported that Lippi returned to Italy as he was homesick but it sounds like he wants to return to China now. The going on in Chinese football are consistently questionable but one thing is for sure that China needs a long term plan.

Another coach who has been linked with the job is German Jurgen Klinsmann. This for me would be a much better appointment.
