Hong Kong's Yuen Long sign Taiwan's Wang Ruei

The Taiwanese Football Association posted over the Christmas period that the Hong Kong Premier League side Yuen Long have signed Taiwan international defender Wang Ruei.

Yuen Long sign one of Taiwan's standout performers

Yuen Long confirmed on the 27th December that they have signed Taiwanese international defender Wang Ruei from Taipower. Wang has been one of Taiwan's standout performers over the recent period of international games.

He has performed well for the national team each time I have seen him play regardless of the scoreline, and I believe he will be a good capture for Yuen Long. It can only be positive for Taiwan if more players go to professional leagues as the local Taiwan Premier League is still trying to develop a good structure for local players.

If Wang Ruei does well at Yuen Long it will provide a platform for him to move onto somewhere even bigger in the future similar to the route Chen Po-Liang has taken in becoming a mainstay in a Chinese League One side that is often pushing for promotion to the Chinese Super League.

Taiwan does need to develop the local league to give players on the island the best opportunity possible, but for now, it is good for the standout players in the league to try and move abroad in order to develop further.

It is what it is, the league isn't going to develop quickly enough for the best players in the league now, but it might in 30, 40 or 50 years and one day Taiwan might have a professional league. Till then the best Taiwanese players should follow in the footsteps of Chen Po-Liang, Chen Hao-Wei, Yaki Yen and Wang Ruei in seeking chances to play in professional leagues outside of Taiwan.
