South Korea win is bittersweet

On Wednesday South Korea beat the World Champions and consigned them to a bottom place finish in Group F. The win, however, was bittersweet as due to Sweden triumph over Mexico the Koreans failed to reach the last 16 along with Germany.

Son Heung-min although of course very happy with the win was left a bit disappointed with the overall outcome of the three matches.

Son said after the game "We beat the world champions and normally it's a dream and we can be proud of the team. Of course, it's disappointing because we lost in the group but I think I can be pleased after this win and we can be proud of this win. We beat the world champions from the last World Cup and now I'm looking forward to the next World Cup."

South Korea needed to win and hope that Mexico got a win over Sweden but despite two injury-time goals from Kim Young-Gwon and Son Heung-Min Mexico did not do their job as they lost 3-0 to Sweden.

Although the performance was good against Germany overall South Korea have just not been good enough over the three games in Russia. In the first game they got the tactics all wrong and against Mexico, the side was too scared to attack.

Son touched on these points afterwards as he said "I'm a bit disappointed because we have a lot of good players and we couldn't show them in the next round, but we're looking forward to the next game. This win is very big for the fans and for us, the players. We've done very well and we're happy and we deserved to win. During the game, we were just concentrating on the game. We did very well. We didn't think about the other game, we were just focused on our game."

Next, up for South Korea, for the first team will be the Asian Cup in the UAE in January 2019 and Son insists he will be there. He was asked after the game if he would be happy to be selected and his response was "I will be there if my country calls me I will be there and everywhere. I'm a very lucky guy to play for my country and I'm very happy and lucky to have this country."

This looks then that the confidence isn't too low after exiting the World Cup at the group stages. It will be hoped then that Shin Tae-Yong has made his tactical mistakes and will get it right at the Asian Cup as the country aim to win the tournament.
