It was an eventful Wednesday in the Korean FA Cup and AFC Champions League.
What Did We Learn?
The first thing we now know after the Korean FA Cup quarter-finals is that despite one tie still to be played the semi-finals will be played out with four K League 1 sides. This we know as Gimhae City and Mokpo City of the National League exited the cup after brave performances.
Meanwhile, across the water in Japan and in particular Kashima, a great Champions League semi-final was played out. We know Kashima Antlers of the J League will take a narrow lead to Suwon. This was the case as despite Suwon Bluewings leading 2-0 in this match they let this lead slip and ended up on the end of a 3-2 defeat.
The first talking point came in the Champions League where there was a headbutt from Kashima Antlers Korean goalkeeper Kwoun Sun-Tae. This came about after a melee in the box resulted in the keeper putting his head towards the Bluewings midfielder Lim Sang-Hyub. There might not have been a lot of a connection but there was contact and this should have resulted in a red card and not a yellow which the Bahrain referee handed out.
Then in the Korean FA Cup, we saw exits for the two underdogs Gimhae City and Mokpo City. Although both sides put in brave performances losing narrowly. With the teams who had knocked out K League 1 sides in previous rounds being unable to replicate this.
