Taiwan’s women qualify for their first semi-final since 1998
Taiwan’s women have qualified for their first Asian Games semi-final after defeating Vietnam 4-3 in a penalty shootout. The game ended 0-0 after normal and extra time, with Taiwan’s keeper Chu Fong-yi (朱芳儀) was the hero after saving the deciding penalty to take Taiwan further than they have gone for the last 20 years.
Whatever happens now in the semi-finals, it has been a great effort by Taiwan’s ladies and they can return with their heads held high. If they manage to get through to the final it would be monumental.
Taiwan’s women to play China’s women in the semi-final
Taiwan will now face China in the semi-finals of the Asian Games. The game should be quite intense considering who their opponents are, but Taiwan will go into the game as massive underdogs. With the game being played in Indonesia and not Taiwan or China, it should be played out in a friendly enough manner.
China is one of the stronger teams in Women’s football and will be expecting to get to the final, but I saw in Taiwan’s match against South Korea that they are prepared to battle until the end. At 2-0 down in that game, Taiwan’s women showed more spirit to push and try to get back into the game than their male counterparts ever did all tournament.
Taiwan are rank outsiders
The teams who have qualified for the last four – Japan, South Korea, China and Taiwan. In the world of women’s football, China and Japan are very strong. South Korea is a vastly improving side and is not far behind the Chinese and Japanese, but Taiwan is the anomaly in the final four.
Unexpected to still be in the competition with their illustrious opponents, they’ll need all the fighting spirit that has got them there to stand a chance of making the final. Personally, I do hope Taiwan will make it to the final but it is likely that China will make it through. In the end, Taiwan has done magnificently regardless of what the outcome is in the semi-final. I for one will be cheering them on.
Taiwan Women vs China Women will be played on Tuesday the 28th of August, the winner will go on to play South Korea or Japan in the final, the losers will play in the bronze medal match.
