Lee Jae-sung had an impressive debut for German second division side Holstein Kiel, providing two assists for his side in a convincing win.
Lee was a driving force behind Holstein Kiel’s win and was clearly determined to build on that superb opening day debut. His strong running and dribbling ability causing all sorts of problems for Hamburg who were the more high profile opponents on the opening day where Kiel ran out 3-0 victors.
Holstein Kiel fans got their first chance to see Lee play at home
Holstien Kiel’s fans got their first chance to see Lee play in a home game when they took on FC Heidenheim last weekend, and Lee was again instrumental in Kiel getting another positive result.
The South Korean midfielder scored his first goal of the season in a 1-1 draw that means in his first two matches as a Holstein Kiel player he has contributed directly to 3 goals.
Lee Jae-sung justified in moving to a lower profile team
To be honest before Lee moved to Holstein Kiel I hadn’t heard of the club before, and I doubt I am alone in that. A quick look on Wiki told me that they are a historical German side who have been struggling in recent times and found themselves in the lower reaches of the German football pyramid.
As I was reading through Wiki it said they were only one game away from becoming a Bundesliga club, but they lost out in the relegation/promotion playoff and have to stay put in the second division.
In my opinion Lee has made a good decision in joining a lower profile team to ensure that he gets an ample amount of playing time unlike other Asian players who move to Europe but go straight to a team in a major league then struggle for playing time.
Lee has no doubt already become a key player for Kiel after two matches, if he had have moved to a bigger side it would be questionable whether or not he would have got the same amount of playing time, or the same key role in the team. It is only two games into the season but so far it is proving to be an excellent decision by Lee in moving to Kiel, because whatever happens in his career there, more European clubs will start to pay a lot of attention if he continues with this kind of form.
