Taiwan qualify for the AFC women’s Futsal quarter finals

Taiwan’s women have successfully navigated the group stages of the AFC’s Futsal Championships which are currently taking place in Bangkok, Thailand. They were grouped with Vietnam, Bangladesh and Malaysia; Vietnam were clear favourites to win the group, but it was unclear who would finish second.

Taiwan started the tournament with a narrow 1-0 defeat against Vietnam, where the game could have easily been tied as Taiwan hit the post during the game. In the second game, they fell a goal behind against Malaysia, however knowing they needed a win to stay in the competition they managed to rally and win the game 4-2.

With Malaysia facing Vietnam, and Taiwan playing bottom side Bangladesh in the final group games it meant that Taiwan most likely only needed to win to make sure they made it through to the quarter-finals as long as Vietnam managed to defeat Malaysia.

Results went as expected, which is exactly what the Taiwanese ladies were hoping for, Taiwan defeated Bangladesh 6-1 and Vietnam defeated Malaysia 3-1. This meant that Taiwan grabbed the runner-up spot in the group behind Vietnam and qualify for the quarterfinals.

In the quarterfinals, Taiwan will play host nation Thailand in what will be their toughest game in the competition yet. Thailand is not the strongest team by any means, but if they manage to get past them who knows. The game takes place at the Bangkok Arena, Thailand and kicks off is 18:00 local time.
