Japan to play in 2019 Copa America

In April, we reported that China had rejected an invite to compete in the 2019 Copa América however; we can now confirm Japan will take that place. Qatar will join them but with no teams from North America participating.

CONMEBOL confirmed the two nations were included in the 12-nation tournament as they praised their links with the Asian Football Confederation.

Japan previously played in the Copa America, in 1999, while Qatar uses this as a perfect warm-up for the World Cup in 2022 that they will host.

Looking back to the 2015 tournament Brazil was originally due to host this in 2015 but this with Chile, who went on to win the trophy that year after defeating Argentina in a penalty shoot-out.

The same sides also met the following year in a special edition of the tournament to celebrate 100 years of the tournament (originally known as the South American Championship), with Chile again winning on penalties'.

The 2019 Copa America is to take place between June 14th and July 7th next year.
