Diego Simeone hits out at Chinese Super League transfer window

Diego Simeone has hit out at the Chinese Super League because of the date their transfer window slams shut. In Europe, the transfer window closes on January 31st at 11 pm but the Chinese transfer window doesn’t close until February 28th.

As the window closes later in China than Europe this leaves Chinese clubs free to sign players from European clubs even though the transfer window has closed throughout European leagues, and it is this which has upset Simeone.

Augusto Fernandez, Yannick Carrasco and Nicolás Gaitán have all already been sold by Atletico Madrid to Chinese Super League clubs after the transfer window closed in Europe. There were still fears from Atletico right up until the end of the transfer window in China that Fernando Torres was going to join his fellow teammates at Dalian, but that transfer won’t be able to happen now until the end of the season; that is of course if Dalian still hold an interest in completing the transfer in the summer.

These departures have left Simeone’s Atletico with only 17 senior players left at the club to choose from and as the window has been closed for the whole month in Spain. Meaning Simeone was unable to use any of the funds generated to add reinforcements to his squad. This led Simeone to bemoan, “Chinese clubs unsettle players in Europe after the window closes”. He then went further and added, “The transfer window should be the same time in every league around the world”.

Having matching transfer windows for every league in the world is very idealistic and unrealistic. With most leagues around the world having different start and end dates it would be impossible to synchronise them to ensure they’re all matching dates.

It’s very obvious why Simeone became so irritated with Chinese Super League clubs because his squad has been decimated after the transfer window has closed. There is no doubt however that the Chinese clubs paid a handsome amount to bring the players they brought to China which means Simeone should be able to benefit from this in the summer transfer window if he remains at Atletico.
