China reject Copa América invite

The Copa América is an international men's football tournament contested between national teams mainly from South America. It is the oldest international competition in the world and along with teams from South America since the 1990s, teams from North America and Asia have also been invited to take part.

In 2019 the 46th Copa América will take place in Brazil with 16 teams due to take part from three different football confederations. With six teams still to be confirmed as taking part in the tournament, it was stated this week that China had declined an invitation to play in Brazil in 2019.

The reason for this is down to the fact that they have important World Cup qualification matches coming up close to the same time. With China being a footballing nation that is looking to expand the refusal to play at the Copa América might come as a surprise.

However, I think this just shows how important it is for them to get to the World Cup in Qatar.
Talking of Qatar it also looks like they might accept the invitation and take China's place at the 2019 Copa América. As with Qatar hosting the World Cup, they do not need to qualify and the tournament will be perfect competitive football for the country to help warm up for the 2022 World Cup.

It is thought that the six places still to made up for the  Copa América will be Canada, the United States, and Mexico from North America. With Qatar and Australia joining ether South Korea or Japan from the Asian Football Confederation in the competition.
