Chen Po-Liang captains Hangzhou Greentown in China League One opener

Chen Po-Liang captained his Chinese League One side Hangzhou Greentown with national team manager Gary White looking on from the stands. In the game, Hangzhou defeated Nei Mongol Zhongyou 2-0.

There couldn’t have been many Taiwanese players in history to have captained Chinese sides. As it was the first game of the season, it remains to be seen whether Chen-Po has been made club captain for the season or he just took the armband for the opening game. We are willing to stick our necks on the line and predict he has been named the new club captain for the season.

Chen Po-Liang is very clearly one of the most vital players for the Taiwanese national team whenever he plays, and now it’s clear that he is just as vital for Hangzhou Greentown with them making him the captain.

Often claimed the best player of his generation in Taiwan, he stands out as a level above most of his teammates which shouldn’t be unexpected in a country where most of the players are semi-pro. Gary White will be hoping he can pass on all his experience to the younger generation of Taiwanese players coming through in the future.

Now Hangzhou Greentown is obviously seeing in him what people in Taiwan have known for a long time - Chen Po-Liang is a great player, and clearly a leader.
