Australian - Andrew Nabbout heads to the J-League

Andrew Nabbout had been on fire in the A-League with Newcastle Jets and it would seem Urawa Red Diamonds had noticed. As the Australian attacker who was an inspiration this season in the A-League with his final contribution being a match-winning strike (see goal below) for his club at home to league leaders, Sydney FC heads to the J League.

As Nabbout departed Newcastle Jets at the beginning of the month to join Japanese club Urawa Red Diamonds for a reported fee of around £350,000.

Newcastle Jets said in a statement that the bid had triggered the release clause in his contract. The offer for Nabbout had not come as a shock to fans at this was hinted at with his prolonged farewell to the crowd on his final appearance.

The Australian forward said the following upon leaving the Newcastle Jets;

“I’ve loved my time in Newcastle and it’s been an absolute honour to represent the town and the fans, who have stood by us through thick and thin.

“It’s a bittersweet moment to be leaving, we’ve got a great group of lads here and I’m loving my football, but this is an opportunity I can’t pass up – it’s something I’ve worked for, for such a long time.

“This club has given me so much and I’ll be forever indebted to the people of Newcastle.
“I’ll certainly be keeping my eye on things from afar and cheering on the boys on as they push on to the finals.”

With Andrew Nabbout joining the champions of Asia he will be hoping to further his career and who knows if he keeps improving he may head to the World Cup in the summer. This it would seem may be the case as the forward was named in the Australian squad for the first time this month by coach Bert van Marwijk.
